Hannah and Chris Austin were enjoying burgers at a lake-side Texas restaurant when she took off her engagement ring to eat.
“I feel really stupid now looking back,” Hannah said. “I didn’t even tell him I took it off, [he] had moved his elbow and knocked it right off the table.”
The ring went straight through the wood slats of the floor and into the 74-foot lake beneath them. Not only was she devastated her ring was gone, it held sentimental value to her. “The diamonds are from my mother’s wedding ring and stones from my great-grandmother’s engagement ring,” she said. “It’s not just you’re run of the mill, go to the jewelry store and pick one up.”
She immediately burst into tears while Chris and strangers got down on their hands and knees and searched for the ring. “Literally, just bellies on the deck looking through this little crack,” Hannah said.
A diner recommended that the couple call a diver to see if they would have better luck searching the bottom of the lake for the engagement ring. Thinking they had nothing to lose, Hannah and Chris made the call.
Diver Robert Weiss came to the rescue and jumped into the water to search for the ring. Despite Hannah being hopeless that he’d find it, Robert was successful. With a camera attached to his head, Robert caught Hannah’s reaction when he held the ring out of the water.
“He’s like, ‘Is this it?’ and I’m like, ‘That is my ring!’” Hannah said. “Completely overwhelmed, fell to the ground!”
